No Fewer Than 6 Lose Their Lives in Stampede at Ghana Military Recruitment Drive
At least 6 individuals have lost their lives amid a stampede at a military recruitment gathering held in a sports arena in Ghana.
The Wednesday's "devastating" incident appeared to have been triggered by "an unexpected surge of applicants who overcame security measures and stormed the entrances," announced a release from Ghana's armed forces.
22 additional individuals were hurt, including 5 who remain in critical condition.
Thousands had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, Accra, with the aspiration of joining the armed forces.
Ghana has a rate of joblessness among young people of about thirty-two percent, the latest government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events normally attract massive gatherings and frequently result in disorderly situations.
The closing date to apply for this recruitment was extended by a week to allow for additional candidates, as some had faced difficulties in the application procedure.
